About us

A bowl is one of the most honest ways we say “I love you”

Fifteen years into veterinary practice across the Mountain West, Dr. Reed noticed something that never showed up in a textbook: the exam room conversation almost always turned to food. Not because owners were confused about nutrition labels, but because feeding their dog well was one of the clearest, most daily ways they knew how to show love. A full bowl, chosen carefully, is affection you can measure out twice a day.

That observation is the reason Build The Better Bowl exists.

Fifteen years, one recurring lesson

Dr. Reed has spent her career treating dogs across a wide range of settings, breeds, and circumstances — the kind of varied, hands-on caseload that rural and regional veterinary practice tends to produce. Across those fifteen years, one pattern kept repeating: the dogs eating a genuinely well-balanced diet, whether commercial or home-prepared, were consistently the ones with better coat quality, steadier energy, fewer GI complaints, and, over time, fewer of the chronic issues that quietly erode a dog’s later years.

None of that came from a single miracle ingredient. It came from the basics done consistently and correctly — the right protein, the right fat, and the full slate of vitamins and minerals a dog’s body actually depends on, in the right proportions for that specific dog’s size, age, and activity level. It’s a simple idea. Getting it right, meal after meal, is the part most pet parents were never given a real way to do.

What Dr. Reed is, and isn’t

Dr. Reed is a licensed veterinarian, not a board-certified veterinary nutritionist or dietitian, and she’ll be the first to say so. Build The Better Bowl isn’t built on a claim to a credential she doesn’t hold. It’s built on something she does have: fifteen years of clinical experience watching what nutrition actually does to a dog’s body over time, paired with established nutrient science — the same NRC research that underpins veterinary nutrition more broadly — translated into something an everyday pet parent can actually use.

Where a formulation question goes beyond that scope, Build The Better Bowl says so plainly and points pet parents back to their own veterinarian or a board-certified veterinary nutritionist. That’s not a caveat we bury in fine print. It’s part of how we think this should work.

Why “custom” isn’t a marketing word here

Every dog on the other end of a leash is a different animal — different size, different age, different activity level, sometimes a different sensitivity or health condition entirely. A feeding chart printed on the side of a bag was never built to account for any of that. Build The Better Bowl was built specifically to.

That’s the whole premise: take the nutrition science seriously enough to do the math correctly, and build it around the individual dog rather than an average one. If food is one of the ways we show our dogs love, it deserves to be built with the same care and attention any of us would want in return.
